Technology and the Birds of Optimism

Posted by Steve Riat on Mar 25, 2020 8:59:54 AM

Beyond the Crisis. With the uncertainty and gloom currently surrounding us, my team challenged me to find a positive and maybe even hopeful message to deliver to all of you.  So, I accepted the challenge with this caveat: Nothing in this article is to make light of the COVID-19 virus, the lives affected by it, or the economic impact its presence may have now and perhaps for months to come.

Premise Phone System or Hosted Solution?

Posted by Steve Riat on Feb 25, 2019 2:37:29 PM

This only recently became a key question you should be asking when upgrading your company's communications system.  I believe there are a few key things that are a no-go when looking at each system.  First, let me cover Hosted Solutions.  Specifically, if you have these items or issues, then this is not the right solution for you.

Give a Child an iPad - 8 Years Later

Posted by Steve Riat on Feb 11, 2019 2:16:24 PM

I have always been an early adopter of technology, even way back. I remember being in grade school programming in BASIC on my Commodore 64.  Technology has changed a lot since then. It is much more obvious the impact it can have on learning. When the iPad 1 came out in 2010 I was one of the first to have one. The iPad was not the first tablet in our house (tablet being defined by a touch screen computer in slate form); however, it was the first that was truly refined and did what it promised.

Are You Purposeful About Your Customer Experience?

Posted by Steve Riat on Jul 30, 2018 3:12:42 PM

Recently it feels like I am always thinking about my customer experience.  Let’s face it, it is not because I am having a good customer experience.  When I look at some of the companies that are growing exponentially, they almost always have an amazing customer experience-for example, Zappos.  Super fast shipping, free returns and an amazing corporate culture that can be felt through any interaction.  Others might include;

Are you Focused on Being Productive?

Posted by Steve Riat on Apr 26, 2018 12:23:44 PM

My office is a time machine!  You may have heard me say this before, but some days it really does seem like I come in to work and the next thing I know, it is time to go home.  What did I do with 9 or more hours?  It is not like I was staring out the window or was caught up in some huge project that was in alignment with our company goals. I decided to spend time looking at what things I was doing and if they aligned with my HIBU (Highest and Best Use).  There were some startling findings.

The Difference Between Good and Bad Tips

Posted by Steve Riat on Mar 15, 2018 9:58:52 AM

We were at the dinner table this week and I am not really sure how the topic came up, but Caden, my oldest son, asked the question, “When a server at a restaurant asks you 'How is everything?' you  wouldn’t say bad, would you?” To which my wife stated, “Sure I would” (and for that matter she does!) Why would you pay for a meal that was overcooked, undercooked or just wrong?

Are You Productive or Busy?

Posted by Steve Riat on Jan 23, 2018 3:12:44 PM

I have to ask myself, "Are you productive, or busy?" several times a day and have discovered my benchmark of productivity is that day before vacation. You know, you want all those little things off your plate so you can enjoy those days off without thinking about work. That last day of work I am laser focused, I have a list, I don’t respond to the ding of messages on my cell phone, it is all about getting those final tasks completed.

How to Kill Culture Through Lack of Accountability

Posted by Steve Riat on Jan 11, 2018 2:16:13 PM

I started my professional career working at a RadioShack and really enjoyed the work. It had all the aspects I enjoy! We served customers, learned all about the new technology and worked with a progressive team of peers. I still remember my first manager Randy. Randy was more than just a manager, he taught us financials, selling skills and much more.
